Watermelon ‘Crimson Sweet’ is a delicious, attractive variety and one of the best‑tasting large melons you can grow. With the right conditions — even here in the UK — fruits can reach an impressive 11kg. Bred in the 1960s, this variety is known for its strong disease resistance, making it a relatively easy and rewarding choice for home growers.
It has the classic striped skin in dark and light green, with deeply red, juicy flesh that’s wonderfully sweet.
Melons need high temperatures and humidity, so in all but the warmest parts of the UK they’re best grown in a greenhouse or under the protection of a cold frame or cloche.
