Tomato ‘Raf’ is a rather special variety for us at Collie Flowers, first discovered on the markets near Head Gardener Hazel’s home in Spain — the region where this classic marmande type originates. Bred in the 1960s as a winter tomato, we grow it here in the UK over the summer with great success.
The name ‘Raf’ comes from its resistance to the fungus Fusarium oxysporum lycopersici — resistente al Fusarium in Spanish. Fruits are usually oval and slightly flattened at the ends, with deep grooves and those characteristic dark green shoulders. Inside, the flesh is pinkish, compact, very firm, juicy and meaty, with only small seeds. The flavour is typically sweet and full, making it a real favourite for salads and slicing.
