Sweet Pea ‘Matucana’
Approx. 20 seeds
The epitome of a classic sweet pea — intensely fragrant, beautifully coloured and one of the earliest to flower. Its magenta and violet bi‑coloured blooms appear in early summer and are packed with that rich, nostalgic scent gardeners adore.
‘Matucana’ is famed for its exceptional fragrance — one of the strongest of all sweet peas — and produces long, elegant stems perfect for cutting. Flowers appear over a long season, bringing colour, scent and cottage‑garden charm to trellises, arches and wigwams.
Grow in full sun in fertile, moist but well‑drained soil. Sow indoors in autumn or early spring, or direct in spring once the soil has warmed. Pinch out young plants to encourage bushiness and provide strong support as they climb. Regular picking encourages more blooms.
If you could only grow one sweet pea, this should be a strong contender: elegant, reliable and wonderfully perfumed, perfect for cutting and filling the house with scent - it's one I grow every year.
