St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

A bright, uplifting perennial with sunny yellow midsummer flowers, loved by pollinators and brilliant for naturalistic planting. St John’s Wort is easy to grow from seed and settles happily into borders, wildflower areas and relaxed cottage‑garden spaces. Once established, it forms a gently spreading clump that returns reliably each year, bringing warm colour and soft structure to summer planting.
Seeds need light to germinate, so surface sow onto moist compost and keep warm until seedlings appear. Plants thrive in moist but well‑drained soil in full sun or partial shade, and are long‑lived once settled. Grow seedlings on in bright light and plant out once established. Cut back in early spring to tidy and encourage fresh new growth.
