Silene coronaria (Rose Campion)
Approx. 50 seeds.
Commonly known as Rose Campion, this short‑lived native perennial has silvery‑grey, felted foliage and vivid rose‑pink flowers held on long, slender stems. Each blossom lasts just a day, but the plant produces them in abundance — vibrant, vivacious colour that persists for months from June to October. A perfect border filler and worthy winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, its plentiful blooms are also a popular destination for pollinating insects. It self‑seeds happily, so a little editing may be required if you prefer a tidier display.
Grow in well‑drained soil in sun or semi‑shade; although plants can suffer root rot if exposed to prolonged wet conditions they will happily grow as a marginal bog plant in the short term. Deadhead regularly unless you want it to self‑seed. Cut back in autumn. Sow direct or on the surface of moist compost and lightly cover with compost or vermiculite. Germination takes 10–15 days.
