Physalis (Cape Gooseberry)
Approx. 50 seeds.
Cape Gooseberry is a tall, vigorous plant that can reach up to 2 metres. A perennial (though grown as an annual in the UK), it produces delicate star‑shaped flowers through July and August, followed by papery husks that turn bright orange‑red as the fruits ripen. Inside sit sweet, tangy berries — perfect eaten fresh, cooked into jam or used as a garnish to brighten desserts. Easy to grow and full of character, Physalis brings both beauty and flavour to the garden.
Sow on the surface of moist compost and keep warm and bright. Germination takes 10–14 days. Grow on as you would a tomato plant if unsure — the care is very similar. Plant out after frost into full sun and fertile, well‑drained soil.
