Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)

Approx. 50 seeds.
A beautifully aromatic herb with tall, elegant stems and a fresh citrus scent. Lemongrass is widely used in Asian cooking, herbal teas and home remedies, and is surprisingly easy to grow from seed with warmth and bright light. Plants form dense clumps of slender, arching leaves and thick, flavourful stems that can be harvested fresh or frozen for later use.
Lemongrass is a tender perennial, developing in clear stages:
  • Year one — establishing the clump and producing perfectly usable stems
  • Year two — thicker, more robust stems
  • Year three+ — big, architectural plants
Because it grows fast in warm conditions, you don’t need to wait for maturity — you can harvest from the first year, taking the thickest stems from late summer onwards. If plants are brought indoors for winter, you can take the occasional stem, but growth slows and harvesting should be light. In following years, established clumps produce thicker stems earlier in the season, with the main harvest period running from mid‑summer to autumn.
In the UK, lemongrass is best grown in pots so it can be kept warm in spring, moved outside in summer, and brought indoors before frost. A brilliant plant for cooks, greenhouse growers and anyone who loves fragrant, architectural herbs.
