Kale ‘Red Russian’ produces large, flat, toothed leaves with deep purple veins — beautifully ornamental and wonderfully versatile in the kitchen. The leaves are very tender and full of flavour, delicious raw in salads or cooked. They’re also softer and sweeter than many other varieties, making them a great choice for gardeners who prefer a milder kale.
With excellent winter hardiness, this variety is a reliable crop from winter into spring, just when fresh garden produce is in short supply. Undercover sowings in autumn can extend the harvesting season even further.
Companion planting tip: grow kale alongside nasturtiums to help draw cabbage white butterflies away from your crop, and plant mint nearby to help deter flea beetles.
