Honesty ‘Crown Mix’ (Lunaria) is a much‑loved old‑fashioned cottage‑garden plant, treasured as much for its seed pods as for its flowers. The distinctive flat, translucent, papery pods — each holding a cluster of dark seeds — are beautiful in dried arrangements, but if left on the plant they also add lovely winter interest in the garden.
In spring and early summer, Honesty produces fragrant purple or white flowers that are highly attractive to pollinating insects. As a member of the Brassica family, it can be susceptible to the same issues as cabbages, including club root, so good soil hygiene and rotation help keep plants healthy.
Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering, but allow some to set seed so the plants can self‑seed gently around the garden — one of Honesty’s greatest charms.
