Cornflower ‘Blue’ (Centaurea cyanus) is a classic annual with slender stems and rich, gentian‑blue blooms that look beautiful both in the garden and in a vase. The thistle‑like flowers are a favourite in wildflower and pictorial meadow plantings, and they’re exceptionally attractive to bees and other pollinators.
For best results, grow in full sun and moist but well‑drained soil. The wiry stems can need a little support in exposed spots, especially on windy sites. Deadheading will keep the flowers coming right through summer, but allow some blooms to set seed towards autumn — the dried seedheads provide valuable food for birds and will often self‑seed gently for the following year.
A brilliant, low‑maintenance annual that brings colour, wildlife and movement to any border or meadow‑style planting.
