All about growing Aubretia from seed
Growing Guide
Aubretia, often called rock cress, is a low‑growing, mat‑forming perennial that’s perfect for tumbling over walls, edging paths, or filling gaps in rockeries. It stays evergreen, with small hairy leaves, and bursts into sheets of purple, blue, or pink flowers in spring. At only around 10cm tall but spreading generously, it’s one of the most reliable groundcovers for our gardens.
Sow seed in spring or autumn. Scatter thinly on the surface of free‑draining compost, cover lightly, and keep moist until germination. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Harden off before planting outdoors once frost risk has passed. Plant Aubretia in full sun, spacing about 30cm apart.

Top Tip
Aubretia thrives in well‑drained soil, including chalky or sandy ground, and is drought‑tolerant once established. Water during dry spells in the first season, but otherwise it’s low‑maintenance. After flowering, trim lightly to keep plants neat and encourage fresh mgrowth. Divide clumps every few years to rejuvenate and spread plants further. With minimal care, Aubretia rewards you each spring with carpets of colour that brighten the garden and attract pollinators.
