All about growing Heuchera from seed

Growing Guide

Heuchera are all about the foliage, producing neat clumps of evergreen to
semi‑evergreen foliage and tall, airy stems of tiny bell‑shaped flowers in
shades of red, pink, coral and white. Flowering from late spring into autumn,
it brings colour, movement and delicacy to borders, rock gardens and
containers. The wiry stems make excellent cut flowers, and the plants are
long‑lived and reliable once established.

Heuchera seed can be sown at any time of year, but germination and early
growth are best in cool, bright conditions. Avoid sowing when excessively
high temperatures and low humidity are forecast as this can cause poor
germination, damping off and weak seedlings. Surface sow onto moist,
well‑drained compost and do not cover, as light is needed for germination.
Maintain a temperature of 18–25°C. Germination is naturally slow and
erratic, taking 10–60 days, and may benefit from a brief cold period if
nothing appears.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, pot into small pots and grow on
somewhere cool and bright. Plant out after frost into fertile, moist but
well‑drained soil in sun or partial shade. Space plants 25–30cm apart. Mulch
annually, as the woody crown can rise with age.

Top Tip

Cut back old foliage in early spring before new growth emerges. Deadhead spent flower stems to prolong flowering. Heuchera is generally trouble‑free and excellent for pollinators. Its long season, evergreen foliage and airy flowers make it a valuable perennial for borders, containers and cutting.
