Essential Gardening Jobs for April: Everything's Waking Up
April is one of those months where the garden suddenly feels alive again. Buds fatten, bulbs burst, and seedlings start to look like real plants. It’s a hopeful, energetic time, but it can also feel a little full‑on if you’re not sure what to prioritise.
Here’s what I’ll be focusing on this month to keep things steady, simple and enjoyable.
Jobs for the Garden
- Tidy away the last of winter by cutting back any dead or damaged growth.
- Weed beds and borders before the warm weather helps them take off.
- Top up beds and pots with compost or mulch to feed the soil for the season ahead.
- Divide congested perennials while the ground is still soft and workable.
- Deadhead spring bulbs but leave the foliage to die back naturally.
- Check pots, trays and raised beds for moisture — April can dry out fast.
- Firm in any wobbly supports and get trellises ready before plants start climbing.
- Keep an eye out for slugs, snails and flea beetles as temperatures rise.
- Start hardening off tender plants on mild days.
- Refresh tools, ties and netting so you’re not scrambling in May.
These small, steady jobs help the whole garden shift smoothly into spring.
Seeds to sow this month
There’s plenty you can sow now, whether you’re working indoors, outdoors or a bit of both.
Flowers
- Hardy annuals straight into the soil: calendula, cornflowers, nigella
- Half‑hardy annuals indoors: cosmos, zinnias, marigolds
- Sweet peas if you haven’t already — they’re very forgiving
Veg
- Carrots, beetroot, parsnips
- Lettuces, spinach, rocket
- Spring onions and radishes for quick wins
Herbs
- Basil (indoors for now)
- Coriander and parsley
- Chives and dill outdoors if it’s mild
Tip: If frost is still hanging around, pause outdoor sowing for a week or use fleece to protect young seedlings.

Seedlings & Young Plants
A few hardy favourites can move outside this month.
- Potatoes
- Onions and shallots
- Sweet peas (with supports ready)
- Hardy annuals you started earlier
If the weather turns cold again, don’t panic — a bit of fleece or a cloche is all they need.
Looking After April’s Blooms
Your autumn‑planted bulbs will be at their best now.
- Deadhead spent tulips and daffodils
- Leave foliage to die back naturally
- Divide perennials while the soil is moist and workable
This is also a lovely moment to take stock of gaps and think about what you might sow or plant later in spring.
Pests, Weeds & Other April Mischief
Everything wakes up in April — including the things you’d rather didn’t.
- Slugs and snails love tender new growth
- Flea beetles start nibbling brassicas
- Weeds appear overnight
A few gentle habits help keep things under control:
- Weed little and often
- Water regularly (dry soil attracts flea beetles)
- Use wildlife‑friendly slug deterrents
- Keep young plants protected with mesh or fleece
Preparing for the Season Ahead
April is a brilliant month for getting ahead before the real rush begins.
- Clear beds of weeds and old roots
- Add compost or well‑rotted manure
- Firm the soil for brassicas
- Mark out planting spaces
- Check your supports, canes and netting
- Make a note of anything you want to grow more (or less) of this year
A little prep now makes May feel much calmer.
